What is Edmodo?
Edmodo is a secure, social learning platform for teachers, students, schools and districts. Edmodo provides a safe and easy way for your class to connect and collaborate, share content and access homework, grades and school notices. Their goal is to help educators harness the power of social media to customize the classroom for each and every learner.
How Do I get Started?
Visit Edmodo and select “I’m a Teacher” to create your free account. Complete the registration form by choosing a username and password. After you’ve created your account you will be taken to your Edmodo homepage.
Edit Your Profile
Tell everyone a little bit about yourself. Your grade level, subjects taught and anything you enjoy doing outside of school.This will help you connect with other teachers that share similar interests. Find your school and let it be know which school you are currently teaching at and schools you previously taught. Upload a picture that shows us what you look like on a daily basis. Uncheck or check any of the notifications that appear directly under your email address.
What Now?
From here, the first thing you’ll want to do is create your groups, which make it easy for you and your students to communicate and collaborate. Here’s how to create a new group:
Step 1: In the left-hand column of your home page, select the “create” link.
Step 2: Give your group a name, complete the details of your group and select “create”.
Step 3: Once you’ve successfully created a group, Edmodo will display the group name in the left-hand navigation bar of your home page. You will see the 6-digit code for the group you’ve just created on the right-hand panel. This is the code you will use to invite your students to the group.
How Do Students Join My Group?
Before a student can create an Edmodo account, they will need the 6-digit group code you created from above. Once they have their group code, they can visit Edmodo.com and select the “I’m a student” button. From here they can enter the group code provided by their teacher, complete the registration form and select “Sign up”.
Note: Students are not required to enter an email address to create an Edmodo account.
Join Other Groups
Groups are the power to using Edmodo to its full ability. In the past, I created a subgroup for students who struggled with math. Other times, I created groups to hold online conversations about the book they are reading in guided reading. And I always make sure I create a generic group so students can post useless information. How Do I post to groups?
Are you a facebook user? Then you most likely can see the similarities to the #1 Social Networking Site in the world. You can post to the entire group or individual students. In addition, teachers can create a poll or quiz, share a link or file from the library you create within Edmodo. Students have the ability to post to the entire group or to the teacher. While teachers can send a message to the entire group, individual student or subgroup.
Poll, quiz or File?
Edmodo allows users to post a poll, quiz or file to a message that the teacher is posting to students. Very simple to do, yet effective in getting results and opinions of the students.
Calender and Gradebook
Hold the students accountable for when an assignment is due, upcoming formative or summative assessment, papers, permission slips or special visitors. The calender feature if stressed, can never be lost or you will never hear, "I didn't know this was due." The gradebook is a nice feature that allows you to keep running grades on quizzes and assignments that you have created and graded within Edmodo. Grades from outside Edmodo can be imported in by creating another account.
Library and Folders
The library within Edmodo will allow you to upload documents, videos, and links. Documents need to be no more then 100MB in size. Once these files are in your library, you can assign them to a folder. For example, how many times have you heard that students left their homework in the classroom? Why not upload their homework to Edmodo, put it in a folder labeled homework and then the students can never say they forgot it.
RSS Feeds
Teachers can add an RSS feed to any of their groups. This could be an RSS feed from a blog, or sites such as YouTube or Flickr, and will allow you to automatically post video, photos or content to a group.
To begin, choose the group name from the left panel and select the “Subscribe Group to Feed” link from right panel (located under the group code). You will be taken to your RSS feed page, which will display any RSS feeds the group is currently subscribed to.
To add a new feed, select the “Add a Feed” button at the top right corner of the page. A pop up box will appear that will prompt you to enter the URL to the RSS feed. Copy the feed URL and select subscribe. You will then see the site appear in your RSS feed page.
To unsubscribe the RSS feed from your group, select the red “Unsubscribe” link on the RSS feed page.
Ideas to Keep Edmodo Fresh
Create a new group, use the RSS feed from a local newspaper and you have instant access to current events.
As you are watching an educational video, have students take notes within Edmodo. After the video, students create one question and answer and then take this student made quiz on Edmodo.
Post a video that might stir up the pot with your students. Have them debate in-class and then continue this conversation within Edmodo when they are at home at night.
Allow students to post videos from what they learned on that particular day and then students comment on them and add what they learned.
Share writing pieces that you have created within Google Docs so that students can comment on strenghts/weaknesses or pick out an interesting line. Here is how you "mash" the two together.
